Martin provides legal advice on transport law, international trade, customs, and business law.  Martin’s transport law practice includes litigation, regulatory compliance, and corporate/ commercial advice in respect of transportation mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, share purchase agreements, equity financing, and corporate governance. Martin also developed a specialty practice in customs and trade law, including advice on rights and obligations under applicable trade agreements, competitive contracting respecting government procurement and trade compliance and dispute resolution assistance with tariff classification, valuation, and transfer pricing matters.

Martin helps companies set up and develop business operations in the transport industry and provides advice on regulatory reviews under various applicable statutes and with the formulation of corporate, regulatory compliance, licensing, and safety practices including carrier safety rating (e.g. CVOR) aspects. He also provides advice on specialized corporate/ commercial agreements and, in respect of transport-industry matters, on marine mortgages/ financing, transportation equipment financing, and transportation services contracts.

As part of his litigation practice, Martin has successfully represented clients at various levels of the Ontario Courts and in the Federal Court of Canada, including the Federal Court of Appeal, and before various administrative tribunals and regulatory bodies. He has also been successfully involved in complex commercial arbitration proceedings arising out of transportation-related matters.

Martin has been a guest lecturer at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa and at the Faculty of Law at the University of Denver and has been invited to speak at various conferences and events, including the 2016 Transportation Summit (on emerging transportation services adopting the Uber Business Model), the Transportation Lawyers Association, the Canadian Transport Lawyers Association, the Ontario Trucking Association (Webinar), and the National Transportation Brokers’ Association and has published several articles in transportation law and related areas of his practice. In addition to his legal training, Martin holds advanced degrees in Economics and Business Administration (M.A. and M.B.A designations) and has benefited from an international upbringing that enable him to work and communicate in several foreign languages (including Spanish, German, Portuguese, and French) in further support of the international reach of his practice.
